MEET URGENT NEEDS

Compared to the living expenses of an American family, providing the bare necessities in Romania is inexpensive. Yet, most families of the poor community cannot even afford the basics.

We believe in the family as a unit standing at the foundation of our society. We assist families in the poor community by meeting their most urgent needs in order to help their individual needs. For over 10 years we have traveled from one community to another, bringing food, clothes, stoves, and construction materials. We pay for their medical bills and for urgent surgeries. In most cases, we replace candlelight with electricity, and water buckets carried from kilometers away, with a water pump near home.

We are amazed by the ambition of these families. So many have changed their lives! They only needed that extra help. You can take action by supporting this mission in the poor communities of Romania.

Flavius and Vlad are brothers. Flavius is four and Vlad is just two. Both of them suffer from a hereditary eyesight malfunction which ends in blindness at a young age. Their mother, Ramona, has the same disease and is totally blind at the age of twenty-eight. Recently both boys went for a medical check-up and the doctor said they must have eye surgery immediately or both will begin to lose their eyesight rapidly. The medical check up read something like this: “both boys have enormous ocular pressure with severe retinal detachment”. It is recommended that both boys have urgent surgeries where the best doctors are, in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, a three hour train ride away. Once the surgeries are completed for both boys, they will not have to

Maria was born in 1945, where she lived in a rural area of Romania in an era of war that ravaged the country. Many people were struggling for life with poverty at every turn. Maria never had an opportunity to go to school. Nevertheless she worked hard for other farmers in her village. When she turned eighteen, she met a man that would become her husband, though he would pass away after ten years of marriage leaving her behind with three small children. Maria was forced to find work outside her village in a factory twenty miles from her house. That meant she had to leave her small children alone during the day. She took early morning bus rides to the factory and back, getting home in the evenings. After one year of this, Maria contracted…

THE LOST BOYS

The three boys together with their grandmother share a shabby little house, where no window, nor any door, stands intact. The wind blows through the house freely. The young lads collect plastic bottles and scraps, and hand them in at a recycling centre, receiving some pin money in return. They obviously can't earn enough to support themselves and their grandmother. The main income consists of the grandmother's handicap allowance plus the children's allowances, and all put together counts for a very small sum. To understand the "very small" part: they can't afford paying for new clothes, nor for school supplies. Only the oldest boy,

Ioan and Rozalia lost their home as a betrayal. Being homeless is hard for everyone, but becoming homeless at an old age is a particularly heavy burden. Ioan (66) and Rozalia (65) lost their home only a few years ago when Ioan's parents died and his sister inherited his parents' home and simply put Ioan and Rozalia on the streets. "She did not care that we had lived in that house all our lives and cared for my parents in their last years," says Ioan sadly. The betrayal fell hard on the elder couple. They tried finding shelter at acquaintances, but sometimes they were doomed to sleep on the street. Finally,
